Scelus - Character Discussion

Sabine Chastain

  • B. 1825 (20)

  • Current year: 1845

  • Vampire

  • Recently turned

  • Appearance

    • 5’5”, medium build, with midthigh-length blackhair, large and drooping brown-black eyes

    • During her time in the convent, she sported the traditional habit of her sect, though she did not crop her hair like many of her cohorts, instead choosing to plait and pin her hair so that it would fit under the veil

    • After being sent to the church in Nottingham, she was no longer able to complete her confirmation, so she was no longer allowed to wear her habit

      • Her chosen clothes are currently very similar to the habit

      • Floor-length black gown with a low waistline (common for post-regency fashion), high neck covered by a locked posture collar, and sheer gloves

      • Often trades the cross lock on the collar with a medallion of St. Denis, Patron Saint of Frenzy and the possessed, on days when her hunger is the worst

    • Wears heavy white makeup over her her already pale skin to explain the pallor of her skin

      • Heavily blushes her cheeks and over her nose to mimic the healthy glow she had as a child

      • Draws over her small beauty marks so they are still visible over the makeup

      • Wears two Crosses of Saint Peter under her eyes

        • Saint Peter - Keyholder to the Gates of Heaven

  • Once a devout catholic on her way to becoming a nun

    • French Catholic whose grandparents fled France during the Revolution (1798)

    • Parents were raised (quietly) as catholics in England

    • Convent of Mercy in Mount Vernon, Liverpool (1842)

      • Not explicit, but used as inspiration

      • About 3 days from London

    • Sent by parents to convent at 15 (Bermondsey, 1840)

      • Parents noticed homosexual tendencies, wanted to set their only daughter on a less sinful life

    • Was pressured by parents and Sisters to pursue taking the vows to become a sister

    • Began her Candidacy at 17, was sent to recently founded Liverpool Convent (1842)

  • Attacked just after her 18th birthday, turned by male vampire she was sent to watch after

  • Tried to hide the wound and the change that was happening to her, however the hunger became too strong to resist

    • In a moment of weakness and bloodlust, she attacked (but did not kill) many of her Sisters

    • Enter Hunter, a vampire hunter called to this area by the Abotess due to the male vampire attacking many of her nuns and sisters

    • Sabine, covered in blood and half out of her mind, fell to her knees in front of Hunter and the Abotess, begging them to kill her

      • “Please, kill me. I cannot be forgiven for this. Kill me.”

    • Hunter, struck by the desperate young woman on her knees, decided instead to satisfy their intrinsic need to dominate and control, having always wanted someone who could be completely devoted to them

    • Hunter convinced the Abotess that since she did not kill any of her sisters, that she should be spared

      • “She should be made to repent for her actions, yes. But to be put to death for something she cannot control? That is not power that you nor I possess, Abotess.”

    • Did not kill Sabine, instead promised the delirious woman that she could be forgiven if she completely devoted herself to ‘God’

      • Sabine agrees, desperate for any way to be forgiven for her actions

      • Soon, Sabine comes to understand that it was not God but Hunter that she had pledged her devotion to

    • Was permitted to stay in the convent so that she could be less of a threat to others around her, but her sisters do not trust her and she is effectively shunned by those around her

    • She is then sent by the Abotess to a new church in Nottingham, where she could be watched over by the reverend and Hunter, who claimed Sabine as their ‘responsibility’

    • She and Hunter were put to work, caring for the sick and injured, and this is where Hunter first revealed their taste for human flesh

      • As Sabine was tending to someone near to death, having suffered a grave injury days before, Hunter grabbed their arm, lifted it to their mouth, and, much to Sabine’s horror, bit deep into the pale skin and ripped away a large chunk, sinew stretching and snapping like bands.

      • With a wide, satisfied smile, they swallowed the bloody flesh. Sabine trembled across from Hunter, both from the shock of watching someone she considered (unrequitedly) a friend commit such an act of violence, but also at the blood that poured from the wound and streamed sloppily down Hunter’s chin and neck.

  • Though she is now unable to complete her confirmation due to her ‘condition’ she still retains many of the habits she picked up during her time in the convent

    • Taking long, contemplative walks through the city and around the grounds of the church

    • Veiling when within the main chambers of the church

    • Reading old texts and working to translate them from Latin to common English
